CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
The female XANTUS' HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen daily in Gibsons
although less frequently. Birders must phone ahead to arrange a time to
visit. Please call Lynn at 604 886-3338 between 8:00 & 8:30 AM. Detailed
directions will follow the sightings.
Sightings for Sunday, August 23rd
A CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW was located at Canfor Point which is located east
of the Treatment Facility along the gravel road paralleling the river. At
Iona a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was seen in Poplars near the NW pond. Also
reported from the ponds were a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 10 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS,
20 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 BANK SWALLOWS and 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS.
At Maplewood Flats in North Vancouver were 2 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS, a
male & female.
At Boundary Bay, between 88th & 96th were a STILT SANDPIPER, 10
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE.
Saturday, August 22nd
On a boat tour of the Bird & Grebe Islets in West Vancouver were 9 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS, 10 BLACK TURNSTONES, 32 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, and 29 SURFBIRDS.
At the foot of 112th, Boundary Bay were 12 CASPIAN TERN, 10 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in over flight and a GREEN HERON.
Another GREEN HERON was reported from Blackie Spit.
The Phalarope population at Beach Grove was 9 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and 1
WILSON'S PHALAROPE. Also reported here were 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.
Seen from the Tsawwassen Jetty were 30 BLACK TURNSTONES, a WANDERING
TATTLER, 1 SURFBIRD, 2 CASPIAN TERN and 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS.
Near the Point Robert's marina was a RUDDY TURNSTONE. Observed at
Lighthouse Park were a FRANKLIN'S GULL and a WANDERING TATTLER.
Sighted from the tip of the Iona Jetty were 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 5
WANDERING TATTLERS, a BRANT, an imm. FRANKLIN'S GULL, and 5 BRANDT'S
CORMORANTS. On the outer pond was a RING-NECKED DUCK and over the inner
ponds were a juv and adlt PEREGRINE FALCONS and 10 BANK SWALLOWS were
observed over the inner ponds. From Iona's Canfor Point which is the area
East of the Treatment Facility Eastward to MacDonald Beach were a WESTERN
KINGBIRD and an AMERICAN REDSTART.
Friday, August 21st
A flock of 13 PURPLE MARTINS was observed at Deer Lake Park.
The Tsawwassen Jetty had sightings of a WANDERING TATTLER, 5 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS, an OSPREY and a GREEN HERON.
Another GREEN HERON was reported from the twin ponds area of Point Roberts.
Recent Vancouver locations for CRESTED MYNAS are Burrard & 2nd, Wylie &
2nd, Hudson and Marine and the south end of the Cambie St. Bridge
Directions to see the XANTUS'S HUMMINGBIRD are as foillows: from the
Langdale Ferry follow Hwy. 101 towards Gibsons. With a Wendy's / Tim
Hortons on your right, turn left at the next intersection which is Pratt.
Follow Pratt to it's end at Gower Point Rd. Turn right onto Gower which
winds its way to Ocean Beach. Follow Ocean Beach to 2nd St. Turn right &
proceed to the top of the hill. Turn left and park at the "Y" junction.
Walk up the paved drive on your right..
