Shorebird to tide forecast for the Columbia Estuary - 1998

Here on the North Coast of Oregon, shorebird volume has been
disappointing. All species expected have dribbled through,
but in much lower than average numbers. Diversity should be
peaking over the next 4 weeks. In an effort to help shorebird
enthusiasts plan their visits, here are the recommended tide
periods that coincide with movements for target species. Those
on the central and south coast should adjust their schedules
accordingly.

A cycle of tides over 8ft will occur between Sep 4 and Sep 12.
This would be a good time to look for RUFF, GODWITS, and BUFF-
BREASTED SANDPIPER. Plan to arrive at SJCR least an hour before
the high and stay until at least one hour after.

Weds SEP 9 1520hr 8.7ft
Thur SEP 10 1602hr 8.7ft

A cycle of high tides peaking just below 8ft will occur Sep 20
to Sep 22. This is still inside the Buff-breast Sandpiper
window. Golden-plovers and early PECTORAL SANDPIPERS would
also be expected.

The best SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER tide is Oct 5 to Oct 11. The
worst of the tourist/fishing season should be through so any
day inside the window should be equally productive. Oct 18 to
Oct 24 is late in the season, but should still offer the
possibility for golden-plovers, Sharp-tails and LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
