After the recent posts regarding Barred Owls little did I think I'd
actually be seeing one face to face, about 10 feet away, as it tried to
decide if canary was on the menu! As I arrived home in the Wedgewood
area of Seattle ca 7PM this evening, a Barred Owl was sitting on a railing
looking into the dining room at our canary. After a lot of head bobbing
it flew headfirst into the glass window, bounced off, sat on a walkway for
a few minutes, flew into a nearby tree and finally flew off. Although
there were two of us, one inside the house taking pictures and me outside,
clearly visible to the owl, it only had canary on its mind. It appeared
to be an adult in size and plumage. The closest I've ever been to a
Barred Owl. (The canary, having been previously stalked or dive bombed by
a cat and a Sharp-shinned Hawk, respectively, seemed to take its decoy
role in stride.)
