I've had no luck with snap traps, and now we've got a new cat so
no traps, cat seems to be doing the job so far.

Glue sticky traps, have caught rats in those, have caught more
cats than rats though. Generally cannot recommend them since I
don't like finding live rats, stuck or not.

It hasn't hurt the cats but boy are they a sorry mess during cleanup.
