Walked the park this morning from 0810-0915 and recorded 21 species. The
highlights were observing a SORA for a few minutes. One of the best looks I
have had. It was walking on cattail leaves and feeding about 1-2' above the
surface, then moved DOWN to water's edge where it flew about 6' to some lily
pads. It walked across about 30' of lily pads feeding, before going into
another island of cattail leaves. Beautiful sight on a sunny morning. Also
had two PILEATED WOODPECKERS fly overhead while loudly squawking, saw my first
AMERICAN WIGEON since spring, a PIED-BILLED GREBE with one young, a male
BELTED KINGFISHER, female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and I heard a VIRGINIA RAIL.
