the South Jetty of the Columbia River, Clatsop Co., OR

Method: 60 minute station count at 100m west of "3 rocks" on
SJCR using 20x60 Bushnell spotting scope and 8x50 Bushnell
binoculars. Birds were sorted as to flyby, sitting on beach, sitting
on ocean or sitting on river.

Notes: The annual SOOTY SHEARWATER migration has begun. At the beginning
of the hour shearwaters were moving by at 1100birds/min by the end of the
hour they had slowed to 220birds/min. A large raft of birds could be seen
sitting on the water. At least 2 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS went by over the
period. A POMARINE JAEGER was closely associated with the shearwater flock.
At least 4 PARASITIC JAEGERS were working shearwaters and terns.
