Columbia Estuary Report - 8/30/98

A good sized VAUX'S SWIFT swarm is roosting in a chimney attached
to some sort of barn in Chinook, Pacific Co. I guess it's that
time of year again.

PURPLE MARTINS have been easy to find this fall especially around
Trestle Bay. A GREAT HORNED OWL was calling from the the pines
near parking lot C early in the morning on Saturday at Ft Stevens.
A POMARINE JAEGER made a close flyby to the viewing platform on
Sunday morning. The large SOOTY SHEARWATER flocks reported on
Friday seem to have fallen off with the strong NE winds.

Shorebirding has still been poor around the estuary. 3 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS were on Trestle Bay Friday. Single GREATER YELLOWLEGS are
scattered in various locations. A lonely WHIMBREL made several passes
over SJCR on Sunday.

In dragonfly news, those orangy dragonflies we had so much fun
watching last fall are at it again. Good numbers were moving
along the SJCR on Friday heading inland (SE).
