On Sat., 14 birders in 4 cars started at 0700 and headed for Aberdeen, then
Johns River, Bottle Beach, Westport, Tokeland, Cedar R., North R. and ending
at Raymond Waterfront City Park about 4 p.m. It was a cloudy, cool (56-64
degrees) and very windy making it quite cold. Two or three came only in T-
shirts and shorts expecting Seattle hot weather and suffered a little. I
think the cold and wind kept the bird count down, as we only had 40 species.
Tokeland was the best as it was somewhat protected from the North wind. There
were 100s of MARBLED GODWITS (but did not find any Bar-tailed), mixed in with
them were a few WILLET, WHIMBREL, and BLACK TURNSTONE. Also had one CASPIAN
TERN, a few WESTERN and LEAST SANDPIPERS and large numbers of BROWN PELICAN
there and at Bottle Beach. A few BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER at Bottle Beach also.
A highlight was seeing a GREEN HERON flying down river at the Raymond Park.
We saw six BELTED KINGFISHER, single males at Johns R. and Tokeland, and a
male and female pair at North River and Raymond Park.
