Dear Tweeters,

A six-day trek with friends to Avalanche Valley on the northeast slopes of
Mt. Adams yielded great views of mountain bluebirds, blue grouse, dippers,
marmots and mountain goats, and some twenty other species. But the greatest
thrill was seeing two adult golden eagles feeding a chirping juvenile in
mid-air. The eagles were over Battlement Ridge, near the Spearhead and
below Rusk Glacier. After receiving its morsel (in its talons, I think) the
juvenile headed down to the ridge and disappeared--possible nest site
there--while the adults circled and moved down canyon. This occurred about
2:30 pm on August 23, 1998, witnessed by three of us from the meadows above
the campsites in Avalanche Valley, elevation about 6700 feet.
