I find it interesting the number of Brown Pelicans reported from what I
would expect north of their winter range. I have a friend in Tofino (mid
westcoast of Vancouver Island) who has recently reported Brown Pelicans
that far north. I would imagine that due to warmer southern waters from
past el nino that there has been a significant fish die-off and that
southern (particularly southern hemisphere) piscivorous birds would be
suffering as a result. Unfortunately, I do not have any data to support
this hypothesis but to push the envelope further.... is anyone closely
scrutinizing these pelicans enough to be certain there are none of the
Peruvian/Chilean (possible ssp of Brown Pelican)variety among them? I
imagine that adults would be readily identifiable however juvs could be a
real challenge....

Cheers,
Don
