Thanksgiving we spent the weekend at Fort Camby as usual. As usual as we
walked the beach near the jetty we saw a western grebe sitting in the
sand high above the tide. Thanks to Tweeters this year we did not just
walk on by and feel sorry for a sick bird. We wrapped it in a jacket for
our own safety and took it to the water--where it immediately swam on out
diving under the waves.

As we walked inland along the north jetty we hear another grebe and found
it at the bottom of a 5 foot cravasse in the sand where the sand piled
on logs had washed away. Once again we did the jacket wrap and deliver
to the water trip. The bird dived under the first wave--which was,
unfortunately only about two inches high--but then swam rapidly on out to
deeper water. We felt it was a good thanksgiving for us. Thanks for all
the sharing of information that gave us the confidence that human
interference in these cases was better than leaving the bird high (or
low) and dry.
