Hi,

I usually try to make it down to Tenino once a year in April to watch the
turkeys. Its something that I have really missed since moving here from
St. Louis where they were a half mile walk from my house.

If you contact the WDFW they have a packet for turkey hunters which gives
the general areas where trap and transfer programs here in Washington
have been successful. If you go to Olympia (on the way to Tenino) and
actually go to the building that WDFW is in. You can talk to a guy named
Dave Weir (sp? also I think he is on the 3rd floor) who can give you
some pointers and tell you where the highest concentrations of turkeys
are. You can also pick up their packet which lists the number of turkeys
killed by hunters by county by year. This also gives you some ideas on
where to look.

All the turkeys in Western Washington (including the San Juans) are
supposed to be of the Eastern subspecies (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)
while parts of the mountains have the Merriam's subspecies (Meleagris
gallopavo merriami). Eastern Washington has a mix of the Merriam's
subspecies and the Rio Grande subspecies (Meleagris gallopavo
intermedia).

I won't go in depth here about how to tell them apart, but anyone
interested can e-mail me privately for that. I suppose if there are
enough people, I'll just go ahead and post it to the list.
