Hi All
Running my census route today was a rather dismal experience. Most of the
waterfowl have departed now that most of the sloughs are freezing over.
Compounding the effects of the onset of real winter were 4 hunters blasting
away. The hearty avian souls left include MALLARDS, BUFFLEHEADS, AMERICAN
COOTS, and a handful of GREEN-WINGED TEAL.
Feeling depressed and fearing that this was a poor omen for the upcoming
CBC, I explored farther afield. In the open farm fields to the north I found
a NORTHERN SHRIKE (first year), a good bird around here anytime of year. I
was also amazed to find 3 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and 8 EUROPEAN STARLINGS;
not calendar readers I guess.
Otherwise, pretty standard winter fare.
Cheers and here's to even better birding
