I've read with amusement the rationale behind changing the vernacular
for the Oldsquaw to Long-tailed Duck because of the offensive nature
of the former. Today, I was at first very puzzled to see a job
announcement for a coordinator for the bounty program for Northern
Pikeminnows, a fish species I had never heard of. I mentioned it
to Scott Richardson on the other side of the aisle and we both
concluded that the Northern Squawfish must be going the same way
as the Oldsquaw. Northern Pikeminnow? Sheesh.

I am a descendant of a Cowlitz indian named Scadayway (I hear
there's a reservoir on the Cowlitz River named after him) but I
would never have thought twice about either of these species'
names if it hadn't been brought to my attention by others.
There is something about changing historically recognizeable
names for political correctness that bothers me.
