Last Sunday,12-6-98, I went on my first birding field trip on the
Washington Puget Sound. The location was Discovery Park( North Parking Lot),
and West Point Lighthouse area. Great weather, great birds, great day! Birds
seen are as follows:

Mystery Loon*
Red-necked Grebe - 3
Horned Grebe - 4
Western Grebe - 150+(huge raft)
Double-crested Cormorant - 7
Canada Goose - 15
American Widgeon - 3
Gadwall - 10
Mallard - 21
Northern Shoveler - 2
Surf Scoter - 5
White-winged Scoter - 7
Common Goldeneye - 59
Barrow's Goldeneye - 17
Bufflehead - 8
Hooded Merganser - 4
Red-breasted Merganser - 18
Mew Gull - 53
Herring Gull - 14
there were other ones but I didn't pay much attention to them
Rhinoceros Auklet - 2 (60 feet off the shore at Wespoint
Lighthouse!!Beautiful!)
Rock Dove - 6
Belted Kingfisher - 1
Red-breasted Sapsucker - 1
Downy Woodpecker - 2
Red-shafted Flicker - 1
Black-capped Chickadee - 26
Chestnut-backed Chickadee - 8
Common Bushtit - 17
American Robin - 5
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 18
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 9
Pine Siskin - 74
House Finch - 1
Song Sparrow - 5
Dark-eyed Junco - 7
35 species + 4 life birds. not bad at all

* The loon had a light gray neck with lots of spots on his back. He swam
well above the water diving occasionally. Light bill but not a Yellow-billed
Loon.Any suggestions?
