Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This

Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

On December 4 a BLUE JAY was seen along Highway I-84 in Union County near
milepost 271.

A COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD was seen December 8 at SE 9th and Malden Streets in
Portland. This is near the Sellwood Bridge. One was reported from this
same area last winter.

Despite heavy seas, good numbers of KITTIWAKES, SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS,
and BONAPARTE'S GULLS are still being seen just offshore. BROWN PELICANS
are still being seen as far north as Puget Sound and coastal Washington.

A late NASHVILLE WARBLER was in Brookings December 4. A first winter
GLAUCOUS GULL was there December 7. Another was near Bandon the next day.
On December 6 a HARRIS'S SPARROW was at Langlois, south of Bandon, and 2
or 3 PALM WARBLERS and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW were near Cape Blanco.

On December 4 a PALM WARBLER and an unidentified EMPIDONAX FLYCATCHER
were at Millicoma Marsh in Coos Bay.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was near Toledo December 3. A first winter
GLAUCOUS GULL was at the South Jetty of Yaquina Bay December 5. A
WHITE-TAILED KITE and several SWAMP SPARROWS were near the Astoria
Airport December 6.

Good numbers of SANDHILL CRANES and TUNDRA SWANS are now in the Sauvie
Island/ Ridgefield NWR area, and at least 200 SNOW GEESE are now on the
Island. On December 5, 27 GREAT EGRETS were along River Road north of
Vancouver.

Two WHITE PELICANS have been seen recently on the Willamette River near
Elk Rock Island in Milwaukie. Two BROWN PELICANS were reported December 3
circling over Oaks Bottom in southeast Portland. A very late VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOW was flying about the Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove December
8. Up to a thousand TUNDRA SWANS are now along Golf Course Road south of
Cornelius.

Staats Lake in Keizer continues to be the Salem area hotspot for
waterbirds. A BURROWING OWL was found December 3 along 119th. Street,
east of Salem. The bird is using a black plastic culvert and is seen on
the east side of the road.

On December 5 a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was along Brownsville Road a few
hundred yards east of the I5 Freeway. An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW is now in
the Fisher Butte Unit of Fern Ridge Reservoir. This area is just north of
Highway 126 west of Eugene.

Waterfowl are now gathering in the Columbia River Gorge. On December 5
single RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were at Hood River and at the mouth of the
Deschutes River.

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and a HARRIS'S SPARROW were near Frenchglen
December 5.

Thats it for this week.
