Dennis and Tweets,
The DeLorme directions to the ACORN WOODPECKER'S granary tree (and
nesting area) are Page 25, C-5.5, here at the west end of Rowland Lake,
leave the Lewis and Clark Highway (Highway 14) and take the road that
goes around the lake. This is Old Highway 8, go approximately 3 miles
east to Balch Road, there are to junctions of Balch road with Old Highway
8. You want to go to the eastern junction, here stop on the south side of
Old Highway 8, at the second telephone pole east of the intersection.
This telephone pole has a small yellow "No Trespassing" sign on it, you
need to stand about twenty feet east of this pole and look south. There
is a large dead conifer tree about 300 feet off of the road, this is not
the tree, the one you want to look at is to the left of this tree and at
least another 300 feet further away. Through your binoculars or better
yet a scope you can see that this nearly limbless snag is riddled from
top to bottom with acorn cache holes, giving it a sponge like appearance.
The birds can be seen year around at this tree.
