Subject: occurrence of dead birds on the outer coast -Reply Date: Dec 11 14:14:14 1998 From: Chris Thompson - thompcwt at dfw.wa.gov
I have collected considerable data regarding beached birds on the outer coast during the past few years, although I have been involved in this latest incident that appears to be tied to the windstorms and such that began around Thanksgiving. From what I've heard through the media and other connections, the birds that havve been most affected this time are Western Grebes, loons, Rhinoceros Auklets, and scoters, but very few shearwaters or other alcids. I find this curious and mystifying as winter storms in the past have seemed to affect procellarids most, especially fulmars and shearwaters.
