Subject: duck names and land bridges

Since the 'long-tailed' duck is widespread and monotypic across the northern
hemisphere, and change from Oldsquaw is inevitable, I can't resist lobbying
for a name that is acceptable and recognized by as many of the potential
users as possible. One vote cast for the romance is dead party...

Second, the locals at Cape Kruzenstern told us that in the cheery days
before the cold war they'd cross the ice and party with their 'kinfolks'
from Siberia. If so, who needs landbridges? (Or is this a modern
cluster-of-igloos myth?)

(PS Yeah, I do know about the igloos thing but I'm too lazy to look up the
right name.)
