There was a nice assortment of gulls December 19 at the Foster Golf
Course/City of Tukwila building in Tukwila. The highlight was a second
winter GLAUCOUS GULL. This is a good place to see lots of THAYER'S
GULLS, and a particularly great place to study plumage variation among
first winter THAYER'S.
The golf course is along Interurban Avenue in Tukwila. From I-5
northbound or southbound take the " Tukwila/Interurban Avenue" exit and
head south along Interurban Avenue. The golf course is on the left. At
the south end of the golf course you'll see a building labeled "City of
Tukwila." There are usually lots of THAYER'S and other gulls sitting on
the roof and gulls ringing a pond on the south end of the golf course.
The GLAUCOUS GULL was sitting on the roof. There are a few HERRING GULLS
around, and many GLAUCOUS-WINGED and GLAUCOUS-WINGED x WESTERN hybrids. I
occasionally see a CALIFORNIA or RING-BILLED GULL, but usually only
pink-legged gulls.
