Birders,

Since 1990-91 a small group of Swainson's hawks has been observed every
winter at a night-roost in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The roost is
a line of eucalyptus trees on the breakwater of a marina (Korth's) at the
confluence of the Mokelumne and San Joaquin Rivers (N. Calif. DeLorme,
page 96). These are predominantly adult plumaged birds. Each year there
are one to three light morph individuals but the flock in the main are
dark, dark/rufous and, intermediate morph. The largest number observed
has been 30. The number of individuals fluctuates from day to day (eg. 14
on Nov 28, and 18 on Dec. 4, 1998). However, at least a few can be
reliably found in this local area throughout the winter. The nesting
area(s) for these hawks is not known.

The existence of this wintering site, coupled with the fluctuation in
the number of individuals, lends creedence to the speculation that there
may be other roosting and foraging sites either in the Central Valley or
elsewhere in California (recently, the closest known wintering site has
been discovered near San Blas Mexico).

Our request is that If someone is sitting on any North American
"out-of-season" (late Nov. thru Feb.) Swainson's hawk observations from
roughly the past decade (not already published in Am. Birds/Field Notes)
it would be appreciated if they would share that information with:

waldoh at juno.com.

Thank you,
