Subject: A little warmth

I was up early this morning, preparing two gallons of oyster stew and
anxiously monitoring the AK Airlines Website flight info -- my daughter was
on her way from Portland to Seattle and, hopefully sometime today,
Ketchikan. At first light, in heavy snow, a bird hit the window. It was a
junco, stunned but not looking too bad. With only one pair of hands and a
curious puppy at my feet, I followed my first impulse and tucked the bird
under my sweater. Her little feet were cold. The phone rang. Holding the
bird with one hand, I talked to my daughter in Seattle. She didn't seem too
surprised to hear I had a junco in such close quarters.
After the phone call, I went back out and offered freedom -- no thank you,
I'm perfectly comfortable right where I am, she said. So I stood around on
the porch, watching it snow, bird still under wraps and the puppy getting
more and more curious, until her toes were REALLY warm. And then she flew.
Hoping all of you are enjoying your patch of warmth this holiday season.
