I birded across Skamania County and into Klickitat County on 1-31-98,
and found fifty six species, the high lights were:
18 WOOD DUCKS at the pond on Balch Rd, Klickitat County.
REDHEADS in most of the lakes along Highway 14 in both counties.
TUFTED DUCK x GREATER SCAUP?, an apparent hybrid male with a short tuft,
greenish head, and an upper back that is grayish, at Drano Lake milepost
57 Highway 14, Skamania County.
TUFTED DUCK, another male at Bingen, Klickitat County,milepost 66.5
Highway 14, in the middle of town go south on Maple St. towards the
marina, after crossing the railroad tracks go straight out the dirt road
that is on the levee around Bingen Pond. The bird is in the Columbia
River just offshore from the Log Scaling building by the log rafts.
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in most flocks of goldeneye in both counties.
MERLIN, 1 along Balch Rd., Klickitat County.
PRAIRIE FALCON, Dallesport Rd. milepost 82.3 Highway 14., Klickitat
County.
HORNED LARK, 8 on the lawn at the County Fairgrounds at Rock Creek Cove,
Stevenson, Skamania County, milepost 43.9 Highway 14.
NORTHERN SHRIKE, 1 on the powerlines at Rowland Lake, Klickitat County.
On the way home, I crossed the bridge to Hood River and found a
RED-NECKED GREBE in the Hood River Marina boat basin and the BLACK DUCK
further west at the usual spot.
