Hi tweeters

We went to Northrup Caynon (6 mi. east of Grand Coulee) early (just
before sunrise) Sat. morning to try again for the Saw-whet. I made a
recording and got no response. I went over to a very thick fir tree to
see if there was a owl in it and guess what--- a owl flew out of it!!
All we could say is it was smaller then a GH owl and bigger then a
Saw-Whet. Our inexperienced guess is a Barred Owl, becuase of where it
was and it's flight was smooth, thereby eliminating a Short-eared Owl (I
think). Sandy heard three different Canyon Wrens, but we couldn't locate
them.

Today (Sunday) we made a trip to Bridgeport, then to Foster Creek Rd.,
172 to Mansfield, south to Jameson Lake (Dead end), back to
Mansfield,east on 172 to 17 (Sims Corner)then north to Leahy junction
and east to Grand Coulee.
On top of the hill out of Grand Coulee, Sandy spotted some old trees
that looked like good bird cover. We pulled over and there was a Great
Horned Owl perched in the middle of the tree. He looked just like his
picture. A Northern Shrike was in the top of the tree next to him.

While standing on a hill overlooking Bennett Lake (by Jameson Lake)on a
cliff to the east we observed a pair of mating Golden Eagles. More
babies we hope!
