my understanding is that the eagle festival in Squamish/Brackendale B.C.
follows a similar policy; the peak number of Bald Eagles is before the
Eagle festival. It started out as a combined festival/count, but 2 years
ago organizers got worried about the impact of too many people accessing
the wrong areas. So, the eagle count is now separated from the viewing
program. Despite the eagle count being moved forward this year
(by 1 or 2 weeks, to 4/1/98), the numbers were still lower than on the
CBC of 20/12/97.
While counting crows for the CBC at the dump, I was talking to a local,
and he mentioned that Bald Eagles are staying now all day round at the
dump, while some years ago they left in the morning for roosts along the
Squamish & Cheakamus rivers. He attributed that mainly to the increasing
number of rafts which bring people to previously inaccessible stretches
of the river.
