Another good place to see great egrets is at the Ridgefield NWR. Just yesterday I was riding the train from Seattle to Portland and encountered a marshy area to the west where the river had flooded into some treed areas - there were several (5-6) great egrets there. I looked up to see where we were, and sure enough, the nearest train sign said "South Ridgefield". This was sort of amusing under the circumstances. I have been riding the train to Portland a lot lately and had just started keeping a "train list" of birds seen en route. I had assumed that an easy bird to find would be a great blue heron, which I searched and searched for and eventually found on the way home near sunset. The great egrets were MUCH more plentiful!
