Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday February 12. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

On February 8 a BLACK-VENTED SHEARWATER was said to be off the end of
Cape Blanco on the southern Oregon coast.

A very tame 3d winter plumaged SLATY-BACKED GULL is now being seen at
Westmoreland Park in southeast Portland. Afternoon might be the best time
to check on this bird. Another SLATY-BACKED is still being seen at the
Pellet Plant on Sauvie Island but it is erratic.

A tan colored GYRFALCON is regularly being seen along Livermore Road just
north of Baskett Slough NWR. It is often perched far off the road and a
scope is needed.

The male TUFTED DUCK is still being seen on the Columbia River at Bingen.
>From the middle of town turn off Hwy. 14 onto a road marked "Bingen
Marina". Continue down the road to the river. The BLACK DUCK is still
being seen at the Hood River boat basin.

RED PHALAROPES, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, and HEERMANN'S GULLS were
reported all along the coast during the week, apparently being pushed
ashore by the strong winds. Individual BROWN PELICANS were being seen as
far north as Yaquina Bay.

On February 9 there were 9 GREAT EGRETS and 2 WHITE-TAILED KITES near
Fenk Road west of Tillamook, and 10 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS on the Bayocean
Shorebird Flats. The MOCKINGBIRD was seen that day at Bay City. Take 4th
street in Bay City uphill to Ocean Street. Take Ocean to the 3d and Ocean
street sign. The bird is being seen in the yard of the Brown House across
the street from the sign.

Up to 5 CINNAMON TEAL are now at the new Beaverton Wetlands Park at 153d
and TV Hwy. in Beaverton. The CINNAMON TEAL in Scappoose Bottoms are
still being seen. On February 8 a BITTERN was at Cedar Canyon Marsh west
of Banks. This is a prime area for marsh birds when the water drops.

The two adult GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen again February 8 along Highway 18
west of McMinnville.

Good numbers of hawks continue to be seen in the Baskett Slough-Livermore
Road area west of Salem. Beside the GYRFALCON, BALD and GOLDEN EAGLES,
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, including a nice black phased bird, many HARRIERS,
and SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen. The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and NORTHERN
SHRIKE continue to be seen along Farmer Road east of the refuge. Along
with the 10,000 or more DUNLIN on the refuge, a flock of 75 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS was seen recently. On February 8 a flock of over 2000 AMERICAN
WIGEON was on the refuge. Among them were 6 male EURASIAN WIGEON.

A TURKEY VULTURE was north of Lebanon February 8. One was at Finley NWR
February 6. Two GOLDEN EAGLES and 13 BALD EAGLES were on the refuge that
day. A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was at Finley NWR February 7.

The LARK SPARROW wintering at Brownsville was seen again February 9. It
is at the end of Bond Road where it becomes a dirt lane. A flock of
SANDHILL CRANES flew over Brownsville that day. Farther south another
flock flew over Creswell. The CRANE movement appears to be right on
schedule.

A PACIFIC LOON was on Lake Selmac south of Grants Pass February 9. It was
wrapped in fishing line, so may be in the area for awhile.

Thats it for this week.
