A good compliment to any GPS reciever is an active external antenna. I
purchased one from Lowe Electronics for my Garmin GPS 12XL (also a 12 channel
parallel receiver). I can mount it on the top of a piece of PVC tubing
that sticks up vertically out of my backpack. Makes a tremendous difference
under heavy tree canopy.

Along these lines, I'd encourage all birders with GPS capability to include
lat/long coordinates when giving directions to a rare bird!
