There's currently an interesting thread on EuroBirdnet about someone in
France finding rows of holes such as those made by sapsuckers Sphyrapicus
sp. in a local red oak Quercus ruber and wondering what European woodpecker
species might have made them. One of the answers was, news to me, "...the
Three-toed Woodpecker Picoides tridactylus would certainly be a very strong
candidate". News to me. Three-toed on *oak*? Drilling *sap-wells*? Is it
just in North America this is a coniferous/burn specialist? Has anyone ever
heard of this or any other non-sapsucker species drilling rows of sap-wells?
