FIELD BIOLOGISTS needed. The Redwood Sciences Laboratory is offering a limited number of internships and volunteer positions at its field stations on the Six Rivers and Trinity National Forests in California, and on the Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon. We are seeking persons to participate in a long-term monitoring study of resident and migrant birds. Demographic data will be gathered at 15 mist-netting stations. Census and vegetation data will be taken in various riparian and adjacent upland habitats. Types of personnel sought: bird census interns (late Apr through mid Jul), primary bander interns, and volunteer assistants (3-6 months - late Mar through October). Census interns must have considerable experience with both visual and aural bird identification and be familiar with the birds of Northwestern California and/or Southern Oregon. Requirements of a primary bander include experience in removing a minimum of 500 birds from mist nets within the last 5 years, processing them for all normal data including aging by skull ossification, and extensive experience in bird identification.

Assistants will help primary banders and censusers. They will gain experience in census techniques, mist-net station set up, removal of birds from mist nets, recording data, banding and processing birds.

They will be expected to have completed the equivalent of a basic ornithology course and have some experience in bird identification. The research station is located on the redwood coast in Arcata, California, home to Humboldt State University. Crews will be based at one of two field stations. In California, the field station is located on the Salmon River near the town of Orleans. In Oregon, the field station is located at Rocky Point on Upper Klamath Lake. Personnel will be responsible for their own travel expense to Arcata. The station will provide transportation from Arcata to the field and return. Vehicles will be provided for field work. Housing will be provided to all personnel. Census interns and primary bander interns will receive a stipend of $18.00 per day. Please send applications immediately. We expect to make selections by March 10. To apply, please send letter of application, resume, and names (including phone numbers and email addresses where available) of three references to:
