I grew up in rural northern Illinois, where Yellowhammer is a common
resident bird. I only later that I learned from a book that a bunch of
pointy-headed scientists back east somewhere had declared that
Yellowhammers were really Yellow-shafted Flickers. Everybody in our part
of the world called them Yellowhammers, right on back to my grandpappy (and
probably his grandpappy, too). Farmers around there still do.

The only other Yellowhammer I have heard of is the Palearctic bunting, as
mentioned in previous posts.
