This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Although a little out of our territory, some of you might be interested in
a TUFTED DUCK at Bingen, Klickitat Co., WA. Bingen is across the
Columbia River from Hood River. It was seen Sunday, February 9. In
Bingen, take Maple Street down toward the river, and then go out the
dirt levee road upstream to the log scaling building. The bird was near
the log rafts in the river, associating with some scaup. Thanks to
Wilson Cody and Mark Nikas for their reports on Tweeters. WA

Four HARRIS'S SPARROWS and 1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were
at Madame Doriane (sp?) Park in western Walla Walla Co., WA, today,
February 13 according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny. Dick Johnson
saw two HARRIS's on February 8 and reported they were with a flock
of Dark-eyed Juncos. The park is just north of the junction of US 12
and US 730, at about US 12 milepost 307. Both species have been
seen with consistency all winter the Harris's numbers fluctuating from
1-6. Look for the sparrows along the little dirt road, which is just
beyond the bathrooms, and runs west along the Walla Walla River.
Just across the road at the Walla Walla River delta, the Denny's report
a couple of GLAUCOUS GULLS, a single PEREGRINE FALCON, and 5
BALD EAGLES on February 13. WA DeLorme 40, D-1.

One of the two BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS reported last week
in Lewiston, Nez Perce Co., ID by Cindy McCormick was seen by
Charles Swift on Thursday, February 12. The bird was at West Pond,
which is the big pond along the Levee Bypass (aka, US 12 bypass
around downtown Lewiston) right next to the railroad bridge over the
Clearwater River. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

A ROCK WREN was seen by John and Marty Hirth south of Pullman,
Whitman Co., WA on Sunday, February 8. The bird was near milepost
5 along Steptoe Canyon Road. From Pullman, head south on US 195
about 11 miles to Colton. Take Rimrock Road from the southwest
corner of Colton to its junction with Steptoe Canyon Road in about 2
miles, then follow it down to the Snake River. The Hirth's also saw a
GOLDEN EAGLE near milepost 7. WA DeLorme 57, B-7.

A single, sub-adult SNOWY OWL was southeast of Moses Lake, Grant
Co., WA on February 13, according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny.
The bird was south of Interstate 90 and west of WA 17. Specifically,
the bird was on the east side of road L SE, between 4 SE and 5 SE.

It seems to have been MERLIN week on the Palouse. One MERLIN was
seen Sunday, February 8 by Dick Johnson in Pullman, Whitman Co.,
WA. This bird was near the mixed flock of CEDAR and BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS in the southeast part of Pullman, near the corner of Spring
and Grant Streets in what the locals call Pioneer Hill. This is in the
same vicinity where a Merlin was reported about a month ago. On the
Idaho side, a MERLIN was in east Moscow, Latah Co., ID on Monday,
February 9, according to Marilyn McCoy. Marilyn lives on Moser
Street, just south of McDonald Elementary School. This bird was
hunting American Goldfinches. On Tuesday, February 10, I saw a
single MERLIN zip by the Taco Time restaurant on Sixth Street near the
University of Idaho campus in Moscow.

A PILEATED WOODPECKER made a rare appearance in Rooks (sp?)
Park in eastern Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., WA on February 11,
according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny. Take Mill Creek Road which
runs east from Walla Walla, just south of US 12, to the park. WA
