For several weeks I've been observing a "pair" of Downy Woodpeckers in my
yard. This weekend they were feeding at the same time on the suet that hangs
from the deck feeder. The female is clearly whiter than the male. Her back
and head markings are white, not gray, while her front is an ever-so-pale
gray. The male is typical Northwest, as shown in the Peterson field guide,
while the female may be a cross between the Northwest and Rockies species.
