I agree with posters who caution against laying blame for any Hawaiian bird
extinctions solely on cats, but if we broaden the query to the Pacific, this
quote is telling...

"Ralph W. Schreiber saw alien cats on Christmas Island completely destroy a
nesting colony [of frigatebirds], eating all frigate eggs and chicks."

...and if we head to the Atlantic...

"Cats have eliminated boobies on the main island of Ascension, killing adults
and juveniles."

These are taken from Craig Harrison's book, _Seabirds of Hawaii, Natural
History and Conservation_.

These incidents were local extinctions. I don't know if any bird species
extinction has come about due to cats alone.

Howland and Baker islands have had their cat problems, too. If my books weren't
all packed (except Harrison), I'd have more details available. Mark Rauzon
worked on cat control out there, I believe, which was very beneficial to
seabird colonies.

I'd go out on a limb and say Grand Coulee's boobies and frigatebirds, as well
as any other low-nesting bird species, would be better off without cats running
free.
