I know what you mean, Joan. I was a stewardess for Reeve
Aleutian in 1968-69, and went to Shemya and Attu practically
every week , with no idea of the birding possibilties. But I just
wasn't ready to see birds then. Reeve took a charter of birders
to Umnak once because there was enough room in the old
WWII dispensary to house them there. I never met them myself,
but other crew members joked about these weirdos for years
afterwards, so I probably wouldn't have wanted to have any-
thing to do with birding. Aah, wasted youth.

One of our DC-6 captains, Pete Kelly, used to take us "sight-
seeing" by flying below the bird rookeries along the coast
of some of the uninhabitated islands. I thought that was cool
then but I would really appreciate it now. Or maybe I would
worry about harrassing the nesting colonies.

I have few regrets in my life but missing this golden opportunity is one of
them.
