After reading a few recent posts on Tweeeters, I went home and carefully
examined the feathers I'd previously thought were from flickers. Based on
my NGS bird guide, I now realize they were actually Barred Rocks.
Similarly, the stunning blue feathers that superficially resemble blue
jays, are of course actually starlings. It's amazing how the iridescence
can fool you.
