This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Thursday, February 26, Friday 8:00 am
update.

The featured birds for today's report are XANTUS' HUMMINGBIRD, ICELAND
GULL, and SWAMP SPARROW.

Sightings for Thursday, February 26:

The XANTUS' HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen at 221 2nd Avenue in Gibsons,
but the bird is only coming to the feeder between 8:00 and 9:30 am and
4:30 and 5:00 pm.

>Directions to the XANTUS' HUMMINGBIRD location are as follows:
>Take the Langdale Ferry from Horseshoe Bay. From the ferry follow Hwy #101
towards >Gibsons and Seschelt. Pass through Gibsons and turn left at Pratt
which is the street just >past the Wendy's/Tim Hortons on your right.
Follow Pratt to its end at Gower Pt. Rd. >Turn right and follow this road
to 2nd Street. Turn right and proceed a short distance >uphill to 221 which
is on your left. There is a sawhorse in the drive.

A second year ICELAND GULL was seen at Burn's Drive and 96th Street in
Delta.

The 3 AMERICAN AVOCETS were at their usual location at the mouth of the
Serpentine.

A SWAMP SPARROW was seen at Reifel just north of the observation tower and
along the edge of the foreshore.

The CLARK'S GREBE could still be found at the middle arm of the Fraser at
the Coast Guard station.

A BARN OWL was seen at the woodlot along the causeway at Iona Island.

The WILLET and 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were at the base of the Tsawwassen
Jetty.

Wednesday, February 25:

A Kumlien's ICELAND GULL was seen at the tip of the south jetty at Iona.
This area also appears to be a staging area for SCOTERS heading north, and
vast numbers of them may be seen flying past the jetty as the tide turns,
with 11,500 SURF SCOTERS, 1,772 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and over a 100 BLACK
SCOTERS. Also in the area were 389 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 2500 MEW GULLS
and 9 PACIFIC LOONS.

A MARBLED GODWIT was seen at high tide near the mansion located west of
88th Street in Delta. A LONG-EARED OWL was on 72nd Street.

The male TUFTED DUCK was seen at the north side of Lost Lagoon in Stanley
Park and the HARRIS' SPARROW was near the stone bridge.

Tuesday, February 24:

A SNOWY OWL was hunting briefly on Terra Nova East on Lulu Island, at the
end of River Road.

A BONAPARTE'S GULL was seen just before Horseshoe Bay, from the Gibsons'
Ferry.

The female REDHEAD was on the east end of Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park.

In Delta over 200 TRUMPETER SWANS were seen on the turf farm at 72nd
Street.

SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen from a number of locations: 3 at the end of 72nd
Street in Delta; 1 at 41B and Delta Port Way; and 1 at Brunswick Point.

Reifel had 1 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL and 4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS.
