Hi Tweets -

The small population of wintering Swainson's Hawks has been known for
some time. I recall first hearing of it about eight years ago. It
apparently overwinters on one of the islands in the Sacramento/San
Joaquin Delta near Stockton. There was much dispute for some time
because of the generally held belief that all Swainson's were in
Argentina. Just ran across a reference to a report, haven't had a chance
to dig it out yet: Herzog, S.K., 1996, Wintering Swainson's Hawks in
California's Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, Condor 98:876-879.
Always lots to learn! Good birding in the new year.
