Paul,
=20
If I can help with the WISA, based on information from the Birds of BC =
literature, nests in the tough trees as well but is also adaptable. I =
quote from the book......
=20
"Most nests (22 of 28) were located in coniferous trees including =
western larch (12), ponderosa pine (5), Douglas-fir (3), lodgepole pine =
(1), and Engleman's spruce (1). Five were trembling aspen and one was a =
power pole....."
=20
Further in the commentary is states....
=20
".......western larch may be the factor limiting the distribution of =
this woodpecker in the province." They explain onwards that =
historically since 1947 there has been an expansion westward of this =
species' in the southern interior where western larch is not very =
common.
=20
So it looks like the bird occupies much more habitat and is somewhat =
adaptable. Its now found in areas that are not dominated or may be even =
devoid of western larch, like in Manning Park in the lodgepole and =
spruce stands.

Michael,
=20
I am wondering: are these not the same type of stands that are=20
used by Williamson's sapsuckers in the interior? I must admit I am=20
quite unfamiliar with the hahits of this woodpecker species.
