Can't help remarking that here again is an issue which would not be an issue
if birders had organised as a lobby even half as effectively and assertively
as hunters and anglers, who are usually numerically far fewer but far more
willing to spend money on land and purposeful alteration to suit their
interests, and far more aggressive in pursuing those interests.

If it were on numbers alone, the birding agenda would be the one to which
the other groups would be accommodating rather than--eternally--the other
way around, where we hope for crumbs from the hunters' and anglers' tables;
yet the sleeping giant refuses to wake to the hard reality that it's a
pay-for-play world now and has been for at least the last couple of decades.
