Hello Tweets,

On Jan. 3rd I birded in S.W. WA, starting out on Dike Access Rd., west of
Woodland in Cowlitz Co., where I observed a gray-morph GYRFALCON, then
continued south to the river unit of the Ridgefield N.W.R., where the BLACK
BRANT was again observed on the south side of the first field as you enter
the refuge in a large flock of smaller races of Canada Geese. Next, I
birded Vancouver Lake, where the CLARK'S GREBE was again noted near the
spillway on the west side of the lake, just south of Vancouver Lake County
Park. 34 Tundra Swans, 4 Red-necked Grebes, and 2 Thayer's Gulls were also
present on the lake. Continuing east on Hwy.14 I observed 7 Snow Geese and
15 Gr. W.F. Geese on the Steigerwald N.W.R., east of Washougal in Clark Co.
33 G.C. Rosy Finches were well seen along Hwy. 14, west of Horsethief Lake
S.P., and my final stop of the day was made at Maryhill Museum where a
single N. Saw-whet Owl was noted roosting in the first row of pines as you
enter from Hwy. 14 in Klickitat Co.

The next day I helped out on the Two Rivers CBC in Walla Walla Co., where a
total of 91 species were noted, with highlights included: 2 FERRUGINOUS
HAWKS, 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 1 OLDSQUAW, 5 GLACOUS GULLS, 2 WESTERN
GULLS, 6 HARRIS' SPARROWS, 2 W.T. SPARROWS, 4 AM. TREE SPRROWS, and 2
LAPLAND LONGSPURS. 4 new species were added to the existing list, which was
probably due to good coverage from the 17 participants, along with favoring
weather in the upper 40's and mostly sunny after morning fog, that lingered
in some areas.

Good Birding,

Patrick Sullivan
