That surprises me too, but I have seen the Common Mergansers
here going after bread and donut handouts in a big way. They
are aggressive enough to outrace a whole flock of mallards and
make off with a piece of pastry three times as big as their own
heads, which they swallow whole. Shameless.

I'm on the ukbirdnet and there have been a couple recent notes regarding
fish-eating birds eating bread, etc. Do our similar birds here - herons,
mergansers, etc. - do the same thing occasionally? I haven't really
noticed it. Never gave thought to birds being *carnivorous*!
