Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday January 8. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

A pure adult male BLACK DUCK was found January 4 among a small group of
MALLARDS at the boat basin at the west end of Hood River. To reach the
area turn off the I84 freeway at the second Hood River exit. Drive north
to the river then drive downstream to the basin. An escapee can not be
ruled out but this individual appears to be a wary wild bird.

At least 2 distinct SLATY-BACKED GULLS are now at the Pellet Plant on
Sauvie Island. The BLACK PHOEBE continues to be seen at the Washougal
Washington Sewage Plant. The Woodland Bottoms GYRFALCON was seen again
January 3.

A bright male COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD was observed January 7 visiting a
feeder near SE 9th and Malden Streets, near the Sellwood Bridge, in
southeast Portland. The bird is often found in a nearby Holly Tree when
not at the feeders. One or two COSTA'S are visiting a feeder in Grants
Pass and another is at a feeder in Central Point in the Rogue Valley.

A BROWN PELICAN was off Tierra Del Mar near Pacific City January 2. A
BLUE-WINGED TEAL was on the Cannon Beach Sewage Ponds January 3. Three
TREE SWALLOWS were in Coquille Valley January 4. An immature male
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at a feeder in Tillamook December 30.

The January 3 Portland Christmas Count found 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, an adult
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD with a rufous back, 2 OSPREY, a SURF SCOTER, and many
GREAT EGRETS. A CASSIN'S VIREO was south of Portland at Oak Grove
December 31. The CLAY-C0LORED SPARROW is still being seen at Canby. The
EMPEROR GOOSE continues at Lewis and Clark State Park on the Sandy River
near Troutdale.

Three BARN SWALLOWS, a BRANT, and a ROSS'S GOOSE were at Ridgefield NWR
January 2. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is again wintering on the refuge. At
least 700 SANDHILL CRANES are now in the Sauvie Island-Ridgefield area.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was at Baskett Slough NWR January 7. Three CHIPPING
SPARROWS were found on the Dallas Count December 30. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
was seen December 31 along Davis Road southeast of Corvallis. A LARK
SPARROW was discovered on the Brownsville Count January 4. It was located
along Bond Road east of Halsey.

Two WHITE PELICANS, 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 2 OSPREY, 2 CATTLE EGRETS, 2
VULTURES, and a HOUSE WREN were recorded on the January 3 Eugene
Christmas Count.

An OLDSQUAW and 2 SURF SCOTERS were on Suttle Lake in the Cascades
January 1 and were found again on the Santiam Pass Count several days
later. Two RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK were found on the
January 3 Klamath Falls Count. Another FERRUGINOUS HAWK was recorded on
the Prineville Count.

A BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a SAY'S PHOEBE, 2 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS, and a TREE SPARROW were recorded on the January 3 Pendleton
Count.

On January 3 a flock of 33 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES was found along
Highway 14 on the north side of the Columbia River a few miles east of
The Dalles near Horsethief Lake.
