During 1944 while at Camp Hale CO, mountain infantry training Center, with
some GI friends we would take our 3-day passes and go up to either Mt.
Massive or Mt. Elbert for hiking and climbing. The 1st sgt.( old army 30's
enlistment ) could not under stand our preference for real wilderness as
opposed to the artificial jungles and chippies of Denver. Knowing there no
MPs in the mountain to check passes he would send off pass less and use the
passes for others to spot the Denver chippies. (background to why I was on
Mt. Massive)

We found a USFS trail rider's cabin next to a stream for shelter used it
often---During one trip to Mt. Massive I was standing by the stream watching
2 male broad-tailed hummers in aerial combat, a territorial dispute no
doubt. Finally they broke off and one landed on a willow not over 3' from
my face. I watched a single drop of blood well up and form on his breast
feathers. After a short while he flew off . Aerial fencing without a button
on the epee' must not hurt too much. Bill
