Columbia Estuary Report - 1/11/98

Astoria is frozen in. Hwy 30 is closed just out of town and there's
ice everywhere. We've been without power for 5.5 hours now and it's cold.

But the good news is there are plenty of birds at the feeder. A NORTHERN
GOSHAWK flew through the yard yesterday (a new yard bird). The number of
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS has increased by 500%, along with a recently
arrived SPOTTED TOWHEE and the usual band of DARK-EYED JUNCOS,
chickadees and a very tame TOWNSEND'S WARBLER.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was hanging out near the furnace vent behind
the high school yesterday. And it was catching some impressive worms.
