Subject: GPS Usage by Birders??

Hi Tweets

Question: Are there any birders that use Global Positioning Satellite
devices for birding purposes??

I got mine awhile back because of some of the places that I was birding in
were without significant features to navigate by when you were "off trail".
I scared myself a couple of times not by being lost but by potentially
becoming lost or being late to a grouping point with others before moving
off to another birding location. So part self-preservation and part
courtesy.

This morning I carried it while looking for the Slaty-backed Gull and took
a fix on the parking lot at Gog-le-hi-te. I will do this several more
times probably (until Elaine gets the bird at least) and compare the fix
each time to see how repeatable it is. BTW the coordinates recorded this
morning with less than ideal satellite position and reception: N 47deg
15min 07.1sec
W 122deg 24min 35.1sec

It also occurred to me that this would be a useful way of giving stake-out
positions for birds if a number of birders had them.

I know that most places are relatively easily located by DeLorme but the
thought sort of intrigued me!

Comments anyone??
