A quick addendum to all of the postings--going to try for the bird this
weekend but was curious about what Xantus might have said re this bird. The
Ann Zwinger book says:

"Although Xantus gradually abandoned the idea of writing a 'Memoir' of his
collection, he still flared up when Baird let the ornithologist, George
Lawrence, describe a new species of hummingbird Xantus found in Cabo San
Lucas. He protested to Baird, "I told in my former letters, at your own
suggestions, I will have the credit of describing ALL my new birds." His
remarks were all the more petulant because Lawrence named the hummingbird
Amazilla (now Hylocharis) xantusii (now Hylocharis xanti)." N..B. to Gene
Hunn: my 1973 Peterson & Chalif shows Hylocharis xantusii. If you have
this old book, the male on plate 18 rather than the female on plate 20?
Trying to do some homework. All, wish us luck!
