Thursday, Hugh Jennings and I took advantage of the good weather to do the
monthly survey of the Redmond Watershed Preserve. We had 2 new species -- a
coot and the call of the Red-tailed Hawk. We've recorded 35 species in the 5
months of doing the survey. Other birds included: Ring-necked Duck, Hooded
Merganser, Belted Kingfisher (couldn't ID sex), Bufflehead, Great Blue Heron,
Downy Woodpecker, Steller's Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, Golden-crowned
Kinglet, Song Sparrow, Winter Wren (only 17 compared to 54 in Nov), and Varied
Thrush. The highlight was a male Pileated Woodpecker that was working on a
dead tree right next to the trail (Old Pond Trail). That made our day.
