My first experience with this was in the Blue Mountains on the way to
Malheur for my first, and so far only, visit. I had stopped at a rest stop
and heard a Red-tail "just over the hill". It kept getting closer, and
closer, until the call was coming from a low shrub about 40 feet away. That
was my first clue that something strange was going on. My next clue was when
a Steller's Jay emerged and "keeerred" very clearly.
