Today I birded along Highway 14 along the Columbia River crossing
Skamania County into Klickitat County, the roads are fine but most
pull-off spots still have two to four feet of snow. Most of the ponds and
lakes along the road are ice covered and the ducks are rafted in the
middle of the Columbia River. The highlights of the 58 species seen were:
1 Clark's Grebe in the Columbia River, off of the boat ramp at Skamania
Landing, at Mile Post 32.9.
Rock Creek Cove in Stevenson, at Mile Post 43.9, is mostly ice covered,
but on the Fairgrounds lawn a few Canadian Geese are being kept company
for the second winter by a Ruddy Shelduck.
20 Common and 4 Barrow's Goldeneye at The Little White Salmon National
Fish Hatchery at Mile Post 56.9. There were 58 Hooded Mergansers, several
Bald Eagles and 1 Golden Eagle below the hatchery.
